How do you say "Happy 4th of July" in Armenian?
Rather than the usual hot dogs and beer at the beach, I spent my 4th of July at Mariam’s with a houseful of Armenians, loud music, lots of dancing, and a ton of delicious food. Oh, and tequila. The tequila.
Throughout the meal, various family members/family friends would give a toast to another family member or guest at the party, toasting old friends, new friendship (her mother’s toast to me), happiness, anything and everything. Everyone had a glass of tequila that was continually topped off, and a hollowed-out jalapeno rimmed with salt and filled with lemon juice as a chaser after the tequila.
It was an absolute blast and unlike any other 4th of July I’ve ever celebrated.
