Earlier I overheard someone telling someone else that you have to “fight for love” and “swallow your pride” when it comes to love, because life’s too short, etc and I felt a slight, unexpected pang.
But then I reminded myself that the other person has to be fighting* for it too, otherwise you’re not so much fulfilling this romantic notion but instead just one person, flailing — at something the other person doesn’t care enough about to try for. (And there’s nothing romantic about that.)
*And at the risk of melodrama, maybe it’s not “fighting for love” — although love is a battlefield — but maybe just working really hard at it and both wanting it and meeting halfway in effort and being willing to do whatever it takes - maybe that’s a better, less dramatic way to say “fighting for love” (and even still, ‘willing to do whatever it takes’ sounds like some serious Romeo and Juliet shit).
